Hey! Thank you for clicking over to learn more about me. Sadly, there’s not much more to tell. Nothing unusual anyway. I care about pretty much the same things everyone cares about. Family. Friends. Fonts.
Okay, okay, I know I shouldn’t mention fonts. Like politics, religion, and your favorite baseball team, fonts are controversial. Especially my favorite font (and possibly yours, too), comic sans. Yet, despite the “friends don’t let friends use comic sans” messages my friend sends me constantly (yeah, I’m looking at you, Colleen), who can resist comic sans? That casual, informal typeface that mimics comic book lettering and has become a cultural phenomenon, despite being mocked by graphic designers (like Colleen) for its overuse in inappropriate, serious contexts.
Okay, I get it that comic sans has technical imperfections, like inconsistent spacing and uneven letter weights. But who among us doesn’t have weight issues?
And sure, it’s probably not the best font for an obituary–unless it’s an obituary for a comic book character like The Joker. You gotta admit (Colleen) it’s perfect for The Joker!
Still, some writers (like me) like to use comic sans for first drafts to lessen the pressure of perfection. Or they feel that the font’s personality adds warmth and approachability that other fonts like Times Roman in Bold (probably your favorite, Colleen) might lack.
I love that about old CS; it’s casual warmth. In fact, I’d use it right here, but my website designer won’t let me. She limits most of the websites she creates to just three font choices because, (she says), “Some writers get carried away and want to use almost every font there is.” She didn’t say it aloud but she had this look on her face that made me suspect she was thinking, even comic sans!
But like I said, it’s a controversial subject, so best we don’t discuss it. The last thing I want is to end up on some “Ban Comic Sans Users” list again.
So back to me (sigh). I’m just so sorry I don’t have any unusual hobbies to share. Except…Well, maybe except one. And it’s a bit controversial, too.
That’s right. Like so many romance writers, I’m obsessed with clocks.
But I’ve run out of time to discuss them, and Colleen says I have too many anyway.
(Colleen is wrong).
